Although inspiration for the decorative columns, porch post and architectural mouldings Décor Pillars produces is drawn from ancient architecture, the equipment they use to fabricate them is cutting edge. Since their discriminating clientele demands precise detailing, when it cam time to upgrade their moulder, selecting a machine that can produce accurate work despite frequent tooling changeovers was a key consideration. After researching a number of machines, the Mississauga, Ontario-based company selected a Weinig Powermat 1000 largely because of confidence in the company. “Weinig is the best in the business and they’ve been around for a long time” says facility manager Sam Bruno. In addition to the quick service he receives, Bruno also appreciates the ease of accessing the profiles on his machine. “once you have entered your library of profiles, you just push a button to pull up the required profile and the machine tells you what heads to change, what knives to put in, and where to dial the heads into.”

Tool changeover is just as easy he explains. “ You just push a button, pop the head off, put another one on, and you’re done within three minutes.” What Bruno likes best, however, is the machines accuracy. “This machine remembers everything. From run-to-run there is no ½- or one-mm difference – everything is exact all the time, so you don’t have to play with it.” Not only does this save time, it has enhanced product quality. “ The employees are also happier,” says Bruno “ all they have to do now is push buttons, so they can’t make mistakes.
